Autumn Dog Walks: The Little Things That Make Them Better

Autumn walks are probably my favourite. The air feels fresher, the leaves are starting to turn and there is something about getting out with the dogs when the days begin to slow down a little.

Of course, the reality is usually less picture-perfect.

There are muddy paws in the kitchen, wet leads draped over the radiator and that moment when your dog spots a puddle before you have even had your first coffee. But somehow, it is still lovely. Dogs do not care about the weather — and, if we are honest, they are usually happiest when they are a little bit muddy.

The autumn-walk essentials

As soon as the weather changes, there are a few things I always reach for before heading out:

  • A lead that can cope with wet grass and muddy paths
  • Treats for recall practice — or just because they are good dogs
  • Poo bags, because somehow you always need more than you thought
  • A towel in the car or by the front door
  • Something warm for me, because the dogs never seem to notice the temperature dropping

It is the small things that make the walk feel easier. You do not need a perfectly planned adventure; sometimes the best walk is just a wander round the field, a sniff of every leaf and a very happy dog coming home.

For the dogs who always find the mud

Dolly has always had a talent for finding the one muddy patch that everyone else has managed to avoid or jumps in the lake before we have chance to even get there.

That is one of the reasons waterproof walkies gear became such a big part of Dolly & Co. I wanted something that could be worn every day, look lovely, and not become another thing to worry about after a wet walk.

BioThane is brilliant for this time of year because it is easy to wipe clean after those muddy adventures. It means the dogs can enjoy being dogs, while you are not constantly washing and drying their collars.

Just look how easy it is to clean our waterproof collars, no soggy smells after either which is a bonus!

Autumn is made for slower moments

There is no pressure to make every walk Instagram-perfect. Sometimes it is just standing in the garden while your dog takes ages to choose the right spot. Sometimes it is a quick walk between school, work and everything else that needs doing.

But those little walks are part of the day too. They give us a breather, get the dogs out of the house and remind us to look up for a minute.

That is very much what Dolly & Co is about: making everyday dog life feel a little more special, without pretending it is always neat, quiet or mud-free.

A little reminder for the season

As the wetter weather arrives, give your dog’s collar a quick once-over. Check that it still fits comfortably, that the hardware is secure and that it is clean and ready for the season ahead.

And then let them get muddy.

After all, autumn walks are supposed to be enjoyed.
